History & Culture

Mount Hua is one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture. According to research by Zhang Taiyan, a scholar of the Qing Dynasty, the names "Zhonghua" (China) and "Huaxia" (the ancient name for China) both originated from Mount Hua. It is also a sacred site of Taoism, ranking as the fourth of the Ten Great Taoist Grotto-Heavens. There are more than 72 semi-suspended caves and over 20 Taoist temples, among which Yuquan Courtyard, Dongdao Courtyard, and Zhenyue Palace are listed as national key Taoist temples. Additionally, Mount Hua is one of the nine best places to watch the sunrise in China, with Chaoyang Platform on East Peak being the optimal spot.
