The Yizhao Highway in Xinjiang (a part of Provincial Road S237) is one of the most beautiful highways in China, known as the "Little Duku", and is famous for its steep mountain roads, magnificent natural scenery and unique folk culture. It connects Yining City and Zhaosu County, with a total length of approximately 180 kilometers. Along the way, it crosses the Tianshan Mountains, offering picturesque scenery. Starting and ending points: Yining City → Zhaosu County (The total length is approximately 180 kilometers, among which the 100-kilometer section over the Baishi Peak of Wusun Mountain is the highlight section).
Altitude: The highest point is Angleite Pass (approximately 3,170 meters above sea level).
Opening hours: It is only open from June to October each year. In winter, the mountain is closed due to heavy snow (the exact opening time needs to be checked in advance).
Features: The road is narrow, with sharp turns and steep slopes. Drive carefully throughout the journey, but the scenery is magnificent.
Highlights along the way
Baishi Peak, the iconic snow-capped peak of Wusun Mountain, features exposed rocks and a perilous terrain. Along the way, there are viewing platforms where you can park and take photos.
The highest point of the Angleite Pass offers a panoramic view of the continuous snow-capped mountains and canyons, with wildflowers everywhere in summer.
Qiongbora Forest Park is located in Chabuchar County, where forests, streams and grasslands complement each other beautifully.
Zhaosu County, the end of the Zhaosu Grassland, is renowned for its grassland, rape flower fields (in July), and the Tianma culture.
Precautions
Vehicle restrictions are limited to small vehicles with seven seats or fewer. Large trucks, recreational vehicles, etc. are prohibited.
Driving safety: There are no guardrails on some sections of the road, so it is necessary to avoid driving at night. Landslides may occur during the rainy season. Check the weather before departure.
The best season: July to August, the grassland is the greenest and wildflowers are in full bloom. The autumn scenery in September and October is charming.
