Tianchi, located on the mountainside of Bogda Peak, the highest peak in the eastern section of Tianshan Mountain, is located on the north side of Tianshan Bogda Peak and more than 40 kilometers east-south of Fukang City, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture. Tianchi is about 110 kilometers away from Urumqi, the water level is 1,980 meters above sea level, about 3.4 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometer wide on average. The shape is long and narrow, with an average depth of 65 meters and the deepest point of 105 meters, it is a perennial stable lake with water reserves of 160 million cubic meters.
Tianchi Lake is an alpine moraine lake formed during the fourth season glacier movement. About 2 million years ago, when the global climate turned cold for the third time, the Tianshan Mountains gave rise to a spectacular valley glacier movement. The glacier slowly moved down with gravel, and the glacier carried out strong grinding and carving on the mountain, forming a variety of ice erosion landform. The valley became a huge concave ice pit, and the front end of the ice tongue melted due to extrusion. The debris and gravel gradually stopped accumulating and became the huge moraine ridge in the Henglan Valley. With the warming of the climate, the glacier receded, and the melting snow water above and below the surrounding snow peaks was stored here into a lake, forming the Tianchi Lake. The natural dike on the north bank of the Tianchi Lake is a moraine ridge.
