The Flaming Mountain, located in Gaochang District of Turpan City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region , is a mountain with russet sandstone as its main body, famous for its unique natural landform and hot climatic conditions.
Flaming Mountain is located about 30 kilometers east of Turpan City, close to the Lianhuo Highway Erbao Township exit.
The mountain is east-west trend, a total length of about 100 kilometers, the widest point up to 10 kilometers, the altitude is generally about 500 meters, the main peak 831.7 meters above sea level. In Uygur language called "Kiziltag", meaning "red mountain", because its mountain is reddish brown, in the hot sun under the sandstone burning flash, the heat wave, like a raging flame and hence its name. The Flaming Mountain was formed during the Himalaya orogeny, about 200 million years ago, and the exposed strata are mainly sandy gravel rock and maronite mudstone of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary periods.
Turpan has a typical continental arid desert climate, and the Flaming Mountain is one of the hottest places in China. The highest temperature in summer can reach 49.8 .C, the highest surface temperature is even as high as 83 °C, and cooked eggs can be baked in the sand nest. As the global climate warms, the summer temperature of the Flaming Mountains completely breaks the previous record, the temperature can reach 55-65 degrees from May to August every year, and the surface temperature exceeds 87 degrees.
Flaming Mountain scenic spot includes natural landscape and rich cultural landscape, such as Western Tour Cultural Corridor, Flaming Mountain Geographical and Cultural Hall, Gaochang Historical Celebrity Hall, etc., showing the unique geological culture and historical heritage of the Flaming Mountain.
Flaming Mountain is a national 4A-level tourist attraction, where tourists can experience the unique natural landscape under high temperatures, visit various cultural exhibition halls, and understand the geological history and human stories of Flaming Mountain. There are also modern facilities such as a giant thermometer exhibition hall and VR "Flying Mountain of Fire" experience hall in the scenic spot to provide tourists with a rich travel experience.
