In the history of the ancient city of Huiyuan, Yili was an important passage from Xinjiang to Central Asia. In order to strengthen the governance of the region, Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty set up General Yili and built Huiyuan City here, and successively built eight satellite cities around it, collectively known as "Nine Cities of Yili". The best preserved is Huiyuan City, known as the first of the "nine cities of Ili", which still retains the old site of the general's house.
